Cooler Kitchen On Tour: Philadelphia Edition

Cooler Kitchen On Tour: Philadelphia Edition

The Cooler Kitchen crew needs a vacation from time to time, and we’ve been lucky to go on some pretty epic traveling adventures! But for a quick weekend away, we New Yorkers seriously enjoy a torrid love affair with a mystical nearby locale at others find somewhat surprising…

We LOVE pigging out in Philadelphia and cruising around between the city’s quirky museums while we work up our appetites for our next meal. The above delicacy that Brandon is stuffing in his maw can be found at what is traditionally our first stop off of the Greyhound Bus in Philly at Reading Terminal Market. This is a DiNic’s roast beef sandwich with broccoli rabe and it just may be the best sandwich in America. Literally, Adam Richman proclaimed it so.

Reading Terminal Market is one of the most incredible food markets in the world. It features all local businesses (many of the stalls are run by Amish folks), and for record I strongly believe that it may be up there with Copenhagen’s Torvehallerne Market as far as quality of food. Remember though, you’re in downtown Philadelphia, so you’re inevitably going to be surrounded by portly Pennsylvanian civil servants instead of top-knotted Danish graphic designers. And that’s just how it ought to stay, by the way. Also by the way, have you taken any time to gawk at the above Apple Fritter donut from Bieler’s Bakery? That’s our traditional second stop at Reading Terminal after DiNic’s.

By divine intervention, we happened to be in town for the weekend of the 6th Annual Party for the Market, and big fancy gala to raise funds to keep Reading Terminal Market going strong. We can’t relate the complete and sheer wonderment of this event, which we had the pleasure of attending. For a reasonable rate we had access to an evening of local live musicians and dancing with an OPEN BAR and all you can eat from the choicest food stalls at Reading Terminal. Do you see this piece of Carmen’s Cheese Steak? It was hands down the best cheesesteak we’ve ever eaten.

We enjoyed oysters, pastrami sandwiches, fried mac and cheese balls…

Followed by chicken and waffles, pierogis, and “cheesy steamers” (or pigs injected with cheese and stuffed in a buttery pretzel blanket). Dessert needs no explanation, just check it out…

Now we’re back home in NYC, albeit  still crawling out from our food induced coma. We’ll be back to Reading Terminal to destroy more sandwiches and donuts some day soon. Thanks Philly! We love ya.
