Homemade Yogurt- Yes, You Can!
I have recently started making my own yogurt- and why not? It’s super easy to do, saves money, and puts me directly in control of the ingredients that go into a staple snack that I enjoy almost every day. When I was originally gifted my yogurt maker, I was a non-believer; it seemed like one of those one-trick pony devices that you use once for the novelty of it, but then it collects dust on a shelf for two years until you go to move apartments and end up trying to unload it on Craigslist. When I read the instructions, however, I decided to give it a shot based on the sheer simplicity of the recipe, and the fact that I already had the ingredients ready to go at home. I started with 4 cups of organic, 2% milk and a culture base of 2 tablespoons plain Hammond Dairy yogurt that I picked up in the green market; this is my absolute favorite, locally made yogurt with 5 active cultures and a creamy, sweet flavor. I blended these two simple ingredients, poured the mixture into the 7 nifty jars that came with the contraption, flipped a switch, and lo and behold I had ridiculously good homemade yogurt at my apartment just 8 hours later. There are plenty of ways to get creative and make all kinds of crazy flavored yogurts, but I gotta say that I’m a sucker for a nice bowl of plain with some fresh fruit, a drizzle of agave and a few sliced almonds. The most brilliant part is that when I’m down to the final jar, I use 2 tablespoons of it as the culture base of my next batch, making my yogurt habit nearly self-sustaining. Every yogurt maker will have specific operating instructions, this is the kind that I own.
